The visitors from Cumbria recorded their fifth straight success over Ashton with a single second half goal sufficient for all 3 points. With Liam Tomsett suspended John Roberts moved into the host’s midfield as the Robins opened with a fine move which saw Danny Pilkington spread the play to Matty Chadwick and then on to Dominic Smalley whose cross drifted just wide.
Workington then put together a decent combination of their own which saw Jack Egan into the area from where Scott Allison moved the ball on to Samuel Joel whose left foot effort beat Ashley Frith but was cleared off the line by Aaron Chalmers. Egan’s knock down then needed Lanre Olapede to outmuscle Jordan Holt before both Chalmers and Josh Granite were denied from successive corners before Mark Lees’ last ditch tackle saved the home side.
On the stroke of half time Lees’ square pass saw Nicky Platt’s low shot saved and Pilkington moved inside on to his left foot but couldn’t keep his effort down.
After the break Simpson’s cross travelled all the way across the box for Workington before Chadwick’s pass just failed to release Pilkington and Holt dispossessed Platt in the area and his pass to Allison needed a decent tip over from Frith to deny the centre forward.
Granite then hesitated allowing Joel to lob his effort on to the roof of the net but recovered to then cut out Tinnion’s near post cross. With just over 20 minutes left the breakthrough arrived as a long ball dropped between Chalmers and Granite for Allison to steer his low effort home. As the Robins searched for an equaliser Alex Johnson chased down a long ball and robbed Taylor with Durnin’s shot then being blocked for a corner, and the visitors were just crowded out as Allison’s pass failed to reach Holt.
The host’s final attempts saw Johnson place a left foot effort wide from Pilkington’s flick and Smalley make insufficient contact with Pilkington’s cross at the far post before a great pass by Durnin released Chadwick who brought a save out of Taylor at his near post.
