Robins hit rich seam

Robins hit rich seam

Match Report | Hednesford Town 3-3 Ashton United

By Dave Robinson

One of the best performances of the season saw Ashton come away with a deserved point from their final fixture against the pre-season title favourites.

The surface at Keys Park was immaculate on a lovely spring day and with the Pitmen needing to beat Hebburn's result to take the title they moved straight on to the attack as Omari Sterling-James squirmed his way to the by line from where his cross saw Jake Jervis' shot well saved by Jordan Eastham with the follow up blocked.

On 12 minutes a loose pass from Darius Osei went straight to Montel Gibson 20 yards out and he fired his effort underneath Eastham.

Just past the midway point of the half James Hardy released Osei towards the corner flag and his pull back found Callum Spooner firing home his side's first goal in fine style into the far corner and 12 minutes before the break Callum Rowe won the ball from Joe Doyle-Charles and combined with Alex Byrne for the latters' near post cross to be headed home by Osei.

The action continued to flow and in a fast moving game Chris Hussey's deep cross then saw Eastham need to recover in time to save Jamie Morgan's header at the far post.

After Sterling-James had sent a left foot curler narrowly wide Rowe progressed into the home area and saw his effort palmed out by Breeden only as far as the lurking Osei who steadied before steering home his second and extend the Robins' lead.

Four minutes after the break a great overlap by Spencer Knight was picked out by Byrne with Osei helping the cross wide and Knight again tested Breeden as he cut into the area onto Hardy's pass.

With the home crowd largely quiet the hosts found a lifeline as a through ball was collected by sub Akheem Rose with Eastham out well to block only for Doyle-Charles to fire home the rebound and after fellow sub Dan Trickett-Smith had fired a high ball straight at Eastham, five minutes into added time Doyle-Charles' long ball into the area dropped for George Williams to sweep home the equaliser leaving the Robins to finish the season in 10th place.
