Robins at the Double

Robins at the Double

Matt Clayton25 Jan - 12:11

Match Report | Ashton United 2-1 Warrington Rylands

By Dave Robinson

Two first half goals were enough to see the home side victorious despite a spectacular consolation for the visitors with virtually the last kick of the game - the first time the Robins have registered twice in a league game since November.

With assistant manager Sean Newton suspended captain Luke Burke moved to centre back and left back Matty Regan immediately had to come across quickly for Rylands to prevent Jason Gilchrist collecting Louis White's pass.

Dangerous right winger Harrison Wood started to deliver a series of crosses from the right wing, one of which clipped the crossbar on its way out of play before his next delivery was headed past the near post by centre forward George Waring.

Just past the midway point of the half Waring's left wing cross reached Wood whose left foot effort came back off the inside of the post and six minutes later the opener arrived at the other end as fine play from James Hardy led to White's cross being glanced home by the head of Darius Osei.

Six minutes before the break Waring slid home Alex Kiwomya's header back with handball ruling the goal out and four minutes later Osei swapped passes with Hardy before forcing the ball home at the near post - the final touch appearing to be an own goal by ex-Robin Regan.

The second half saw the hosts happy to sit on their lead with Rylands struggling to create anything meaningful until they won a corner just past the hour make which ended with a clearance fired back over by Wood and Gilchrist was then just stopped by Patrick Gamble as he tried to collect Osei's header.

Sub Jake Burton's effort was then deflected narrowly wide leading to a second corner which saw Scott Holding denied close in and time was almost up as Dylan Cogill's clearing header was fired spectacularly back into the top corner by Charlie Munro to narrow the scoreline.

There was still time for Osei to test Pilling at his near post as he moved onto Dylan Cogill's pass out from the back.
