Match Report | Ashton United 3-2 Morpeth Town

By Dave Robinson

A dramatic second half saw Ashton United twice come from behind to snatch all three points against Morpeth Town at Hurst Cross after the visitors had led for much of the encounter.

It was a big win for the Robins which lifts them to sixth spot in Pitching In Northern Premier League, Premier after a recent inconsistent run of form.

The scoring started in the 22nd minute as Jordan Eastham was unable to prevent a corner which saw Jeff Henderson’s delivery go straight into the Ashton net.

Eastham had already picked up a back pass which led to Will Dowling’s shot from inside the area being blocked by the advancing Luke Burke before debutant Charlie Hayes-Green forced a tip over from Alex Byrne’s deep cross.

Approaching the interval, a fine run into the area by Daniel Myers led to Eastham denying Billy Gordon with a full length save with Josh Robson heading the resulting corner into the side netting.

The action started to pick up 10 minutes after the break as Luca Navarro won Ashton’s first penalty of the season for a push by Dowling with Sean Newton converting confidently.

Eight minutes later, Morpeth were back in front as a long return ball by Dowling saw Eastham miss his punch allowing Myers to head home.

Robson was then injured after being caught by Enock Lusiama’s high boot eventually leading to 13 minutes of added time, but it was Lusiama who then found the equaliser as he converted Alex Byrne’s long free kick at the far post and next he put the Robins ahead steering the ball wide of Isaac Allan after Hayes-Green had flicked on Scott Burgess’ pass.

Entering added time Byrne’s cross was just headed off the line by Robson before Luke James’ left wing cross brought a good clearing header out of Hayes-Green.

Eight minutes over the 90, Dowling’s free kick forced a full-length tip away from Eastham but when the ball was recycled Byrne was penalised for bringing down Myers by the touchline with James stepping forward only to sky his penalty over the bar.
