Dolly Blues complete double

Dolly Blues complete double

Match Report | Lancaster City 3-2 Ashton United

By Dave Robinson

Despite being winless since November the hosts duly completed a league double after an open encounter in North Lancs.

The visitors had Sean Newton available again following suspension but chose to start with the assistant manager on the bench only bringing him into the action at the start of the second period.

An early throw in for the home side ended with Simon Grand's header being palmed away by Paul Cooper before the subsequent corner was headed clear but it was still only eight minutes in when Charlie Bailey's return ball was headed home by Dom Lawson after an initial sharp turn and cross by Nic Evangelinos.

Nathan Caine's ball into the area then sent Evangelinos clear with Cooper out quickly to block and a further long throw in saw the ball reach Christian Sloan whose effort required a low save.

With 25 minutes on the clock the Robins equalised with practically their first effort as Alex Byrne's return ball into the box was glanced home by the head of Jason Gilchrist following good play between Darius Osei and Josh Doherty but seven minutes later Evangelinos restored the home side' lead as he collected Caine's pass and sidestepped Cooper before sliding home a neat finish.

A great run from ex-Robin Bobby Bjork then ended with Evangelinos just sliding his effort past the post but four minutes before the break a near action replay saw Gilchrist again head the visitors level connecting with Byrne's right wing delivery.

Six minutes after the restart Lawson was given a clear sight of goal with Luke Burke tripping him just outside the area, Evangelinos' on target effort being well punched away by Cooper but the Dolly Blues regained the lead just past the hour mark as a long cross-field pass saw Charlie Bailey get the run on Byrne whose contact inside the area was sufficient for Mr Dutton to award a penalty which was confidently converted by namesake Sam.

With 17 minutes left Gilchirst dragged his effort wide of the far post after collecting Louis White's pass and 10 minutes later sub Lusiama picked up a long ball and was just denied by a low save from Brad Kelly.

The hosts could have extended their advantage further as Yawson tapped home Lewis Mansell's cross from an offside position and Bjork's shot was cleared off the line after Cooper had denied Yawson as he tried to round him.
